Beach litter collection to raise awareness
On Monday 29.09.2014 approximately 100 students and teachers from the Ecolea/International School of Rostock as well as EUCC-D staff joined a beach litter collection along several beach sections at Wilhelmshöhe in Rostock-Warnemünde. Students found many cigarette butts, firework pieces, plastic litter, dog toys and much more. This joint campaign on beach litter collection was mainly aimed to raise students' awareness for the problem of marine litter, therefore, an important part also was to analyse the litter found in the context of sources, disposition, retention time and its consequences for the marine environment and inhabitants. Students also learned how scientists deal with the topic of macrolitter and they practically tried methods how to find small micro-and mesoparticles. Some students dealt with the topic of marine litter in a more artistic way. They created a 'litter man' out of the litter particles found.
