MARLISCO at the 7FP PROFILES Conference in Berlin

The 7FP MARLISCO project took part to the 2nd (and final) PROFILES International Conference on ‘How to enhance IBSE and Scientific Literacy’ in Europe, taking place in Berlin from the 25th to the 27th of August, 2014.

During the conference, the 7FP PROFILES project results were presented to stakeholders and to other invited guests, such as schools and other educational practices and colleagues from other FP6 and FP7 projects.

The conference program offered keynote lectures by renowned scientists in the field, interesting workshops, a poster session and further opportunities for informal discussion and networking.

A central part of our conference was the “Fair of Innovative Science Education Practice in Europe”, which gave an overview of the current state of research in science education practice across Europe.

The Province of Teramo, MARLISCO Coordinator, was invited to manage an information desk (see figure 1) during the fair: it was an opportunity to present the wide range of practical experiences and results gained by the project, together with other numerous EC FP6 and FP7 founded projects on Inquiry Based Science Education to colleagues from science and school practice.

During the fair, the MARLISCO Video Contest European winning videos were displayed for visitors at the MARLISCO information desk (watch the playlist at the following link, https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkrQycwi4_tes-KT2XhofDem-1wE3Cgkf), together with MARLISCO informative brochures, posters, gadgets and deliverables (some of them are available at www.marlisco.eu/results.en.html).

The Province of Teramo, represented by Doriana Calilli, MARLISCO Project Coordinator, and Mara Di Berardo, MARLISCO Project Technical Secretariat, gave information to visitors about the MARLISCO general aims and educational activities and outputs for youngsters and teachers. Much interest was showed for the MARLISCO “Know, Feel, Act! to stop marine litter” on-line course, the second edition of which will be run during the next months.

As a presenter, MARLISCO also had the opportunity to submit a contribution to the book of invited presenters, “Enhancing Inquiry-based Science Education and Teacher’ Continuous Professional Development in Europe: Insights and Reflections on the PROFILES Project and other Projects funded by the European Commission”,
(Bolte, C., Rauch, F., eds, 2014), which has been published on the occasion of the conference. The book is on-line available for download and contains the following article (pp. 259-267) about MARLISCO written by the partners: “MARine Litter in Europe Seas: Social AwarenesS and CO-Responsibility”, by Doriana Calilli and Mara Di Berardo (Province of Teramo), Joana M. Veiga (Coastal & Marine Union), Thomais Vlachogianni (Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and sustainable Development), Sabine Pahl & Richard C. Thompson (Plymouth University), Kathrin Kopke and Thomas K. Doyle (Coastal & Marine Research Centre, University College Cork), Bonny L. Hartley and Thomas Maes (Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture), Demetra L. Orthodoxou and Xenia I. Loizidou (ISOTECH Ltd).
