KIMO Danmark (Kommunernes Internationale Miljøorganisation), Denmark
Description of Organisation:
KIMO - Kommunenes Internasjonale Miljøorganisasjon (Local Authorities International Environmental Organisation) was founded in Esbjerg, Denmark, in August 1990 to protect, preserve and enhance northern Europe’s oceans. The organisation represents coastal communities on marine pollution issues. KIMO represents over 120 member municipalities in 14 countries around the North Sea. In 2007, KIMO expanded to include members in countries on the coasts of the Baltic Sea. The National Network, KIMO Denmark, has 13 member municipalities as of January 2013.
KIMO proactively lobbies government ministers to acknowledge and take action on the issues threatening our marine environment. KIMO promotes its experience and highly-regarded research to persuade ministers to tailor marine legislation to care for our oceans and protect coastal communities.
As a local government organisation, KIMO seeks practical solutions to environmental problems. KIMO has been successful in applying for funding to run demonstrative projects in order to highlight solutions to government and policymakers.
