Sea Brigade Project (Portugal)

The Sea Brigade Project, created through cooperative principles of sustainability and volunteerism, aims to clean up the beaches of Grândola region and raise awareness about marine litter.

Every year, over two weeks in May, a group of volunteers gather to clean up the beaches. At the weekend, about 100 volunteers participate in this action.

The waste is collected from the beach and surrounding dunes and separated into plastic, glass, undifferentiated waste and hazardous waste. The Maritime Police is alerted when hazardous waste is found and Grândola Municipality is responsible for the transport of the garbage bags.
